About this opportunity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is forecasting a cooperative agreement opportunity to support state, local, tribal, and territorial public health laboratories in conducting biomonitoring and assessing human exposure to environmental chemicals, with the closest hard date being the posting on September 22, 2026.
The opportunity is open to a broad range of applicants, including state and county governments, city and township governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), tribal organizations, independent school districts, higher education institutions (public and private), special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, and unrestricted applicants. Applicants may propose biomonitoring activities under one of four components to be completed during a three-year funding period: community biomonitoring investigations in a targeted area for metals, pesticides, or PFAS; state- or regional-level biomonitoring studies; measurement of chemicals of emerging concern not included in the National Exposure Report (including radiobioassay, nontargeted analysis, microplastics, nutritional biomarkers, ethylene oxide, or cannabis secondhand smoke exposure assessment); or enhancement of laboratory capacity and technical expertise through coordination and collaboration with partners. Proposed activities should include clear reporting of findings to relevant audiences.
This is a Cooperative Agreement opportunity under CFDA 93.070 (Environmental Public Health and Emergency Response). The parent program has obligated $808.6 million across 497 awards since 2009, with recent awards ranging from $1.576 million to $17.9 million. Financial assistance provides a 12-month budget period within a project period of up to five years, conditioned on satisfactory progress and fund availability. A formal NOFO with specific application deadlines, award amounts, and evaluation criteria has not yet been posted; applicants should monitor Grants.gov for the full announcement.
Forecast synopsis
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity is to support state, local, tribal, and territorial public health laboratories in conducting high-quality biomonitoring and assessing human exposure to environmental chemicals within their jurisdictions. Strengthened laboratory capacity for exposure assessment will help jurisdictions identify and reduce harmful exposures and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
Applicants may propose biomonitoring activities under one of the following components to be completed during a 3-year funding period:
- Community biomonitoring investigations in a targeted area for metals, pesticides, or PFAS.
- State- or regional-level biomonitoring studies.
- Measurement of chemicals of emerging concern that are not included in the National Exposure Report (examples include, but are not limited to, radiobioassay, nontargeted analysis, microplastics, nutritional biomarkers, ethylene oxide or assessment of secondhand smoke exposure to cannabis).
Proposed recipient activities should include biomonitoring to assess exposures of concern, enhancement of laboratory capacity and technical expertise, coordination, and collaboration with partners to strengthen exposure investigations, and clear reporting of findings to relevant audiences.
