About this opportunity

The National Cancer Institute seeks applicants for P50 Research Center Grants supporting Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Human Cancers with a clinical trial requirement, with applications due September 25, 2026.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, HBCUs, minority-serving institutions including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, AANAPISIs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, faith-based or community-based organizations, federal agencies, regional organizations, city and county governments, state governments, tribal governments, small businesses, for-profit organizations, and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits. Non-domestic entities and foreign components are ineligible; foreign components of U.S. organizations are permitted.

SPORE grants fund translational research on organ-specific cancers or highly related cancer groups derived from the same organ system—such as gastrointestinal, neuroendocrine, or head and neck cancers—or on cancers centered around common biological mechanisms or infectious agents. Cross-cutting themes including pediatric cancers and cancer health disparities are eligible. Research must stem from human biology using cellular, molecular, structural, biochemical, or genetic approaches and must reach a translational human endpoint within the project period.

Applications are evaluated on scientific merit, technical adequacy, investigator competency, facility adequacy, budget necessity, and program relevance. Scientific peer review groups and the National Cancer Advisory Board conduct review.

Funding instruments include grants under CFDA 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research) and CFDA 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research). The three-year funding cycle covers fiscal years 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Synopsis

Through this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for P50 Research Center Grants for Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE). The program will fund P50 SPORE grants to support state-of-the-art investigator-initiated translational research that will contribute to improved prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of an organ-specific cancer or a highly related group of cancers. For the purpose of this FOA, a group of highly related cancers are those that are derived from the same organ system, such as gastrointestinal, neuroendocrine, head and neck, and other cancers. Other programmatically appropriate groups of cancers may include those centered around a common biological mechanism critical for promoting tumorigenesis and/or cancer progression in organ sites that belong to different organ systems. For example, a SPORE may focus on cancers caused by the same infectious agent or cancers promoted and sustained by dysregulation of a common signaling pathway. In addition, a SPORE may focus on cross-cutting themes such as pediatric cancers or cancer health disparities. The research supported through this program must be translational and must stem from research on human biology using cellular, molecular, structural, biochemical, and/or genetic experimental approaches. SPORE projects must have the goal of reaching a translational human endpoint within the project period of the grant.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
