About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity to support the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Tissue Procurement Center (TPC) initiative, with no clinical trials allowed.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), city, township, county, and state governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, for-profit organizations, small businesses, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, Indian/Native American tribal organizations, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, and non-domestic entities.

The TPC will collect, process, store, and distribute high-quality human tissue specimens to support functional analyses of somatic mutations across human tissues. Building on Stage 1 enrollment of 150 healthy donors, the awardee will procure tissues from at least 50 additional healthy donors, bringing the total to 200. The center will also collect up to 10 special tissue cohorts, which may include tissues that can be grown in culture, tissues of high interest for somatic mosaicism studies, clinically relevant samples, organs requiring special handling, and other relevant samples. The awardee will collaborate with other SMaHT Stage 2 initiatives to ensure samples are sufficient and useful for production-level assays within the program.

Funding instruments are grants under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support). Awards are subject to the audit requirements of OMB 2 CFR 200 as implemented by 45 CFR 75, Subpart F. Grantees must retain financial, programmatic, and statistical records for three years from the date the annual financial status report is submitted. The review cycle is four to nine months, with scientific merit and program relevance as evaluation criteria.

Forecast synopsis

The purpose of the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network is to advance the discovery of biological processes and disease mechanisms mediated by somatic mutations in human tissues.

Since 2023, the program has generated multi-omic somatic mutation datasets from a standardized set of human tissues spanning all three germ layers. Building on the Stage 1 foundation, the NIH intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) seeking support for the SMaHT Tissue Procurement Center (TPC) initiative.

The TPC will enable functional analyses of these healthy and clinically relevant tissue samples, providing critical resources to support characterization of somatic mosaicism and its role in human biology and disease. The Tissue Procurement Center will support the Network by collecting, processing, storing, and rapidly distributing high-quality, well-characterized human tissue specimens. Building on the 150 healthy donors enrolled during Stage 1, the TPC will procure tissues from at least 50 additional healthy donors, bringing the total to 200. The TPC will also collect up to 10 special tissue cohorts. The special tissue cohorts may include: tissues that can be grown in culture, tissues that are of high interest for somatic mosaicism studies, clinically relevant samples, organs that require special handling procedures, and other relevant samples. Awardee will collaborate with other SMaHT Stage 2 initiatives to ensure that the samples are sufficient and useful for running production level assays within the program.
