About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is forecasting a cooperative agreement to establish the National Somatic Mosaicism Commons Data Analysis & Organizational Center, which will manage data, coordinate the somatic mosaicism research network, and develop tools and platforms for complex multi-omic datasets generated across standardized human tissues. This is a Stage 2 opportunity building on data infrastructure established since 2023, with no NOFO issued date specified.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), for-profit organizations, small businesses, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, foreign institutions, U.S. territories, and eligible federal agencies.
The Center will combine data management and analysis with network governance, coordination, outreach, and training. Core deliverables include building the SMaHT data portal, Variant Catalog, variant browser, and visualization tools; managing network data; providing access to data analysis tools; developing analysis-ready releases; and conducting outreach and training to clinical and research communities.
The opportunity is assigned to Trans-NIH Research Support (CFDA 93.310). Funding decisions are based on scientific merit and program relevance, evaluated through peer review of significance, approach, innovation, investigator competency, resource adequacy, budget justification, and human or animal subject protections where applicable. Awards are made for at least one year, with additional support up to four more years contingent on scientific review group and national advisory council recommendations, annual performance, and fund availability. The typical review cycle runs four to nine months.
Forecast synopsis
The purpose of the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network is to advance the discovery of biological processes and disease mechanisms mediated by somatic mutations in human tissues. Since 2023, the program has generated multi-omic somatic mutation datasets from a standardized set of human tissues spanning all three germ layers. Building on the Stage 1 foundation, the NIH intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) seeking support for Stage 2 through the National Somatic Mosaicism Commons Data Analysis & Organizational Center. The National Somatic Mosaicism Commons Data Analysis & Organizational Center combines data management and analysis with network governance, coordination, outreach, and training. The Center will develop tools and platforms that allow SMaHT Network members and the wider clinical and research communities to investigate and use these complex datasets.
The center will be responsible for managing network data and providing access to data analysis tools developed in the program. This will include building the SMaHT data portal, Variant Catalog, variant browser, visualization tools, and analysis-ready releases. The center will also conduct outreach to clinical and research communities and provide training in SMaHT resources.
