About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity for Stage 2 of the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Experimental and Computational Technology Development initiative, supporting multidisciplinary development, optimization, validation, benchmarking, and dissemination of technologies for somatic mutation detection and functional interpretation in human tissues.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, U.S. territories, and non-domestic entities.

Awardees will collaborate with other SMaHT Stage 2 initiatives to incorporate validated technologies into production workflows, pipelines, data releases, and community resources. The program builds on Stage 1 foundations established since 2023, which generated multi-omic somatic mutation datasets from standardized human tissues spanning all three germ layers.

This opportunity is funded under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support). Scientific merit review encompasses significance, approach, innovation, investigator competency, resource adequacy, budget justification, and where applicable, measures for protecting against adverse effects. Funding decisions are based on scientific merit and program relevance, with review conducted by a scientific review group and national advisory council. Review cycles typically span four to nine months. Most awards are subject to OMB 2 CFR 200 audit requirements as implemented by 45 CFR 75, Subpart F. Grantees must retain financial, programmatic, and supporting records for three years from annual FSR submission.

Forecast synopsis

The purpose of the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network is to advance discovery of biological processes and disease mechanisms mediated by somatic mutations in human tissues. Since 2023, the program has generated multi-omic somatic mutation datasets from standardized human tissues spanning all three germ layers. Building on the Stage 1 foundation, the NIH intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO)supporting Stage 2 of the SMaHT Experimental and Computational Technology Development initiative. The Experimental and Computational Technology Development initiative supports multidisciplinary development, optimization, validation, benchmarking, and dissemination of rigorous, cost-effective technologies for somatic mutation detection and functional interpretation.

Awardees will collaborate with other SMaHT Stage 2 initiatives to incorporate validated technologies into production workflows, pipelines, data releases, and community resources.
