About this opportunity

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is soliciting a single-source cooperative agreement application to continue the Physiology of the Weight Reduced State (POWERS) study, with an application deadline of November 17, 2026. This is a non-competitive single-source award designated exclusively for the University of Pittsburgh as the Data Coordinating Center for the POWERS consortium; other applicants are ineligible.

The POWERS study aims to understand physiological processes underlying individual variability in weight regain following weight loss. The continuation will support completion of the ongoing multi-center clinical trial, implementation of weight loss interventions, all study visits and procedures including biospecimen collection and analysis, data curation and analysis, and dissemination of findings through publications.

The project period extends three years with anticipated funding of $3.85 million in FY27 and $3.25 million per year in FY28 and FY29. No cost sharing is required. The anticipated award date is March 2027.

Required submissions include a Statistical Analysis Plan (5 pages maximum), Biospecimen Analysis Plan (5 pages maximum), Milestone Plan (2 pages maximum), Research Strategy with detailed timelines, progress report, letters of support from clinical centers and analysis partners, Data Management and Sharing Plan, PHS Human Subjects and Clinical Trials Information, and the full study protocol as an appendix. Applicants must complete System for Award Management (SAM) registration, obtain a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), register in eRA Commons, and complete Grants.gov registration before submission.

Applications undergo scientific merit review by an appropriate Scientific Review Group and subsequent review by the National Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Advisory Council. The cooperative agreement mechanism designates substantial NIH programmatic involvement, with an NIDDK Project Scientist/Project Coordinator serving as a voting member of the Steering Committee.

This opportunity falls under CFDA 93.847 (Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research).

Synopsis

The purpose of this NOFO is to continue the Physiology of the Weight Reduced State (POWERS) clinical trial. The goal of POWERS is to understand the physiological processes underlying individual variability in weight regain following weight loss due to a lifestyle intervention. The continuation of POWERS will allow for the completion of the ongoing clinical trial and to conduct analysis of collected data and biospecimens.

This NOFO invites a single source application from the Data Coordinating Center for the POWERS consortium. Please see Section III. Eligibility for additional information. In accordance with NIH standard peer-review processes, the application will be peer-reviewed, and only meritorious application(s) will be considered for funding.
