About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health (NIDDK and NHLBI) seeks a single cooperative agreement application to continue the Cardiovascular Repository for Type 1 Diabetes (CaRe-T1D) Resource Center, with applications due August 30, 2026. Only the University of Florida is eligible to apply; this is a single-source competition. The NIH intends to commit $2 million in FY 2027 for one award with a maximum project period of 5 years and annual direct cost budgets limited to $1.5 million. Foreign organizations and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.
The Resource Center will execute three core functions: expand the CaRe-T1D biorepository by collecting, storing, and analyzing cardiovascular tissue (hearts, aortas, carotid arteries, and kidneys) from organ donors with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and without diabetes; develop and maintain a Data Commons with artificial intelligence tools for data sharing and analysis; and coordinate research activities of investigative teams within the consortium. The initiative is grounded in the Special Diabetes Program and aims to improve understanding of cardiovascular disease in type 1 diabetes, highlight differences from type 2 diabetes and non-diabetic controls, and guide development of therapies for this major cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals with type 1 diabetes.
Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov or NIH ASSIST by 5:00 PM local time on August 30, 2026, and comply with all requirements in the NIH How to Apply – Application Guide. Required registrations include SAM, Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. All PD/PIs must maintain eRA Commons accounts and ORCID registration. Scientific merit review is expected by September 30, 2026, advisory council review by March 2027, and the earliest start date is May 2027.
Applications undergo NIH peer review based on significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and institutional environment, followed by advisory council review. Awards are structured as cooperative agreements, reflecting substantial NIH programmatic involvement. Recipients must comply with data management and sharing plans, consortium governance structures including Steering Committee and Executive Committee oversight, and collaboration agreements among consortium members. Associated Assistance Listing numbers are 93.847, 93.310, 93.233, 93.837, 93.838, 93.839, and 93.840.
Synopsis
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites a single cooperative agreement application for the Resource Center for the Cardiovascular Repository for Type 1 Diabetes (CaRe-T1D). The purpose of CaRe-T1D is to support innovative, discovery and mechanistic research through the study of human cardiovascular (CV) tissue. This research seeks to better understand cardiovascular disease (CVD) in type 1 diabetes, highlight differences compared to type 2 diabetes, and ultimately guide the development of therapies to treat this major cause of morbidity and mortality for individuals with type 1 diabetes. To achieve these goals, the Resource Center will expand the CaRe-T1D biorepository of human CV tissue, further develop the data commons for data sharing and for artificial intelligence (AI) tools, coordinate the research activities of the investigative teams in the CaRe-T1D consortium, and make CaRe-T1D resources accessible to the broader research community. This NOFO is associated with the Special Diabetes Program (https://www.niddk.nih.gov/about-niddk/research-areas/diabetes/type-1-diabetes-special-statutory-funding-program/about-special-diabetes-program) which funds research on the prevention, treatment, and cure of type 1 diabetes and its complications, including unique, innovative, and collaborative research consortia and clinical trials networks. This is a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for a Single Source that will invite application(s) from eligible organization(s) to apply. Please see Section III. Eligibility for additional information. In accordance with NIH standard peer-review processes, the application(s) will be peer-reviewed, and only meritorious application(s) will be considered for funding.
Eligibility
Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility. Only the following applicant is eligible to apply for this single source funding: University of Florida. Foreign Organizations/Foreign Collaborations:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
