About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health seeks applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators for the Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) Program to purchase or upgrade a single item of high-priced, specialized, commercially available scientific instrument or integrated instrumentation system, with an application due date of July 16, 2026.
Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, and other organizations. Applications must originate from groups of NIH-supported investigators; individual investigator applications are not accepted. Institutional support documentation and multi-user shared-access arrangements are required.
The minimum award is $50,000. The maximum award is $750,000. There is no maximum price limit for the instrument itself. Supported instruments include, but are not limited to, light microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, flow cytometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, and X-ray diffractometers.
Evaluation prioritizes the need for the instrument, technical expertise in the requested technology, advancement of research projects when the technology becomes available, administration of shared instrument usage, and institutional support for long-term maintenance. All applications receive peer review by committees of biomedical research authorities, with recommendations forwarded to the NIH Council of Councils for final review.
The program operates under multiple CFDA numbers: 93.351 (Research Infrastructure Programs), 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants), 93.859 (Biomedical Research and Research Training), 93.286 (Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health), 93.866 (Aging Research), and 93.867 (Vision Research). PAR-27-022 is the reissued notice of funding opportunity. Eligible applicant categories were updated per NOT-OD-25-019.
