About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health, through the Office of Disease Prevention and participating Institutes, Centers, and Offices, is soliciting applications to test innovative approaches to implementing SBIRT/P (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment or Prevention) for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs use and misuse in adult populations experiencing health disparities, with an application due date of May 7, 2027. This R01 mechanism requires a clinical trial.
Eligible applicants span a broad range: non-501(c)(3) and 501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, city and county governments, state governments, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), higher education institutions (public and private), public or Indian housing authorities, special district governments, independent school districts, for-profit organizations, and other entities. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; however, foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted.
Proposed research must include prospective tests of SBIRT/P and must leverage collaborations with healthcare and community partners. The program prioritizes screening for risk of ATOD use and misuse, brief intervention through conversation about harmful substance use, and referral for treatment or preventive services as needed.
Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by peer review groups and subject to secondary review by relevant NIH advisory councils. Selection prioritizes scientific merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NIH and participating ICO priorities.
The opportunity is funded under multiple assistance listings, including the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273), Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), Minority Health and Health Disparities Research (CFDA 93.307), and may receive co-funding through the Office of Research on Women's Health (CFDA 93.313).
