About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Research Programs is seeking collaborative teams to edit, annotate, and translate foundational humanities texts that are currently inaccessible or available only in inadequate editions. This Scholarly Editions and Translations program targets U.S.-based nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions, state/local governments, and federally recognized tribal governments. Proposals must involve at least two scholars working together to produce scholarly editions with critical apparatus, which can be in print, digital, or combined formats. Evaluation criteria will include intellectual significance, methods and execution, collaborator qualifications, work plan feasibility, and publication goals. Applications are due on December 4, 2024, and December 3, 2025, with anticipated award announcements in August 2025 and August 2026, respectively.

The grant offers three funding levels: Planning awards up to $65,000, Implementation awards up to $150,000 per year, and Chairman's Special Awards up to $1,000,000 for five-year projects focused on American history and culture. NEH expects to award approximately $5,000,000 among an estimated 20 recipients per deadline, with project durations ranging from one to three years. Projects must commence between October 1, 2025-September 1, 2026 (for the 2024 deadline) or October 1, 2026-September 1, 2027 (for the 2025 deadline). The funding falls under the Promotion of the Humanities Research program (CFDA 45.161) and supports activities such as manuscript collection, transcription, translation, research, writing, and digital encoding.
