About this opportunity
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is soliciting applications for direct financial assistance to eligible rural hospitals to stabilize operations and sustain access to care in financially vulnerable communities, with an application deadline of July 27, 2026.
Eligible applicants are rural hospitals with no more than 50 acute care inpatient beds, an established Medicare wage index value below 0.90 under the Social Security Act, and location in a HRSA-designated rural area. The program includes a comprehensive table of 167 pre-identified eligible hospitals across multiple states provided in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.
Approximately 167 grants totaling $24,750,000 will be distributed on a formula basis, dividing total available funding equally among all eligible hospitals that submit complete applications. Initial awards are estimated at approximately $148,000 per hospital, subject to adjustment based on the actual number of applicants. The performance period runs from September 30, 2026, to September 29, 2027.
Recipients must ensure funds are used to maintain health care providers and essential services at the individual hospital level rather than the system level. Administrative expenses are limited to 10 percent of awarded funds. Indirect costs may be claimed using either an approved negotiated rate or a de minimis rate up to 15 percent of modified total direct costs.
Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov and include required federal forms, a project narrative, budget narrative, and attestation. Recipients must comply with 2 CFR Part 200 regulations, HHS Grants Policy Statement requirements, and HRSA's strategic priorities. The program is listed under CFDA 93.811 (Rural Hospital Information Systems).
