About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health, through the NIH Common Fund in partnership with other NIH Institutes and Centers, is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity for RNomics Technology Enhancement Centers as a cooperative agreement; applications are not currently being solicited, and this notice provides potential applicants time to develop collaborations and strong projects.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), tribal organizations, state and local governments, county and city/township governments, independent school districts, for-profit and nonprofit organizations (including 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), public and Indian housing authorities, special district governments, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories and possessions, and non-domestic entities.

RNomics Technology Enhancement Centers (RTECs) will further develop existing technologies with demonstrated feasibility to strengthen experimental and computational tools for measuring, mapping, and testing RNA in cells and tissues. Priority areas include end-to-end RNA sequencing and quantitative modification mapping; comprehensive analysis of RNA sequence, structure, modification, interactions, localization, dynamics, and function; and molecular and biochemical tools for RNA manipulation, processing, and functional testing. The program aims to deliver measurable improvements and support broad community use.

Awards under this initiative fall under Trans-NIH Research Support (CFDA 93.310). Funding decisions are based on scientific merit and program relevance. Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by a scientific review group and for program relevance by a national advisory council or board. Review cycles typically span four to nine months. Awards generally run at least one year with potential support up to four additional years contingent on scientific review group and advisory council recommendation, successful annual performance, and fund availability.

Forecast synopsis

The NIH Common Fund, in partnership with other NIH Institutes and Centers, plans to issue Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs) for the RNomics program, which seeks to develop tools for studying the full set of RNA molecules (the RNome) in cells and tissues. The program will support technologies and resources that enable integrated analysis of RNA sequences, modifications, structures, locations, interactions, and functions to advance understanding of health and disease. RNomics includes four initiatives: technology enhancement centers, transformative technologies, molecular standards, and a coordinating center. Applications are not being solicited at this time. This notice is being provided to give potential applicants time to develop meaningful collaborations and strong projects.

This NOFO will establish collaborative RNomics Technology Enhancement Centers (RTECs). RTECs will further develop existing technologies with demonstrated feasibility. These centers will strengthen experimental and computational tools for measuring, mapping, and testing RNA in cells and tissues, with the goal of delivering measurable improvements and supporting broad community use. Priority areas include end-to-end RNA sequencing and quantitative modification mapping; comprehensive analysis of RNA sequence, structure, modification, interactions, localization, dynamics, and function; and molecular and biochemical tools for RNA manipulation, processing, and functional testing.
