About this opportunity

The Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy is soliciting research ideas, comments, and recommendations from universities, national laboratories, industry, and international entities for future work scopes of its competitive research programs, with rolling-basis submissions accepted annually by May 15 for potential inclusion in the following fiscal year's funding opportunity announcements. This is a Request for Information (RFI) only; DOE does not intend to award any contracts or financial assistance as a result of this submission process.

Eligible respondents include higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, for-profit organizations, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, national laboratories, and international entities. No cost share or matching requirement applies because this RFI does not result in awards.

The RFI seeks input on technical research areas with high impact potential for the Office of Nuclear Energy's applied research mission, feedback on the structure and application processes of current funding opportunity announcements (particularly the Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research FOA), and recommendations for new competitive research directions. Responses are submitted on a rolling basis at NEUP.gov per attached instructions.

This RFI feeds into the Nuclear Energy Research, Development and Demonstration program (CFDA 81.121), which has distributed $5.66 billion in federal funding across 1,717 awards since 2002. Recent solicitations under this program include the FY 2026 Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research FOA, Infrastructure Revitalization awards, and the Distinguished Early Career Program, supporting university-led research, reactor infrastructure, and advanced nuclear technology development.
