About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health seeks applicants for the Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP) for Health Professional Schools and Graduate Schools (R15, Clinical Trial Not Allowed), with applications due January 7, 2028. Eligible institutions must be domestic, award NIH-relevant baccalaureate or advanced degrees in health professions, have received less than $6 million per year in NIH support (total costs) in 4 of the last 7 fiscal years, and be standalone colleges rather than components of university systems. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are ineligible; however, foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are allowed. Eligible applicant categories include public and private higher education institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Hispanic-serving Institutions, HBCUs, and TCCUs.
The program supports small-scale research projects proposed by faculty members to expose undergraduate and/or graduate students to meritorious research and strengthen the research environment of eligible institutions. REAP grants fund basic and clinical research spanning 26 distinct CFDA program numbers across disease areas including cancer detection and diagnosis, cancer treatment, cancer prevention, cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, translation and implementation science for heart and lung diseases, arthritis and musculoskeletal disease, mental health, drug use and addiction, environmental health, child health and human development, deafness and communication disorders, oral diseases, biomedical imaging and bioengineering, nursing research, allergy and infectious diseases, cancer biology, human genome research, complementary and integrative health, aging research, vision research, and sleep disorders research. Evaluation criteria emphasize scientific merit and general significance of proposed study objectives; technical adequacy of experimental design; investigator competency; adequacy of facilities and resources; necessity of budget components; and relevance to announced program objectives. Award ceiling, floor, number of awards expected, period of performance, and cost share or matching requirements are not specified in the source material.

Update #2 · Latest ·
The purpose of the Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP) for Health Professional Schools and Graduate Schools is to stimulate basic and clinical research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. REAP grants create opportunities for scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH research programs to contribute to the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. REAP grants are intended to support small-scale research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic institutions, to expose undergraduate and/or graduate students at health professional schools or graduate schools to meritorious research projects, and to strengthen the research environment of the applicant institution.Eligible institutions must award NIH-relevant baccalaureate or advanced degrees in health professions and have received less than $6 million per year of NIH support (total costs) in 4 of the last 7 fiscal years. In this NOFO, a college is a stand-alone entity and not a component of a university system.
