About this opportunity
The Food and Drug Administration is soliciting applications for a cooperative agreement to support research, education, and outreach on botanical natural products, with an application due date of August 21, 2026. This is a single-source funding opportunity restricted to the University of Mississippi as the sole eligible applicant.
The FDA intends to award one cooperative agreement with an initial funding level of $5.1 million in fiscal year 2026. Optional continuation funding of $3.5 million is available for years 2–3 and $4 million for years 4–5, with a maximum project period of five years. The funding instrument is a cooperative agreement under CFDA 93.103 (Food and Drug Administration Research), activity code U01 Research Project Cooperative Agreements.
The program priorities focus on identifying and developing a prioritized list of botanical ingredients based on safety concerns and market trends in foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetics; acquiring, validating, and characterizing authenticated reference materials including raw and processed plant materials and purified natural products; exchanging technical and scientific information with FDA scientists and other stakeholders; collaborating with FDA scientists in mutual research areas; and coordinating scientific workshops, training, and conferences on botanical topics of public health relevance.
Evaluation criteria are scored across five categories: significance (10 points), investigator qualifications (10 points), innovation (30 points), approach (25 points), and environment (25 points). Application budgets are not limited but must reflect actual project needs. Applicants must complete required registrations in the System for Award Management, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov before submission. Recipients must comply with 2 CFR Part 200 requirements and maintain cybersecurity standards aligned with NIST frameworks. Annual Research Performance Progress Reports are required when funding spans multiple years.
