About this opportunity

The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking applications for the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Consortia (RDCRC) for the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN). This cooperative agreement aims to advance and improve the diagnosis, management, and treatment of rare diseases through highly collaborative, multi-site, patient-centric, translational, and clinical research. Each RDCRC must propose to focus on at least three different rare diseases, with a special emphasis on early identification of individuals with rare diseases and clinical trial readiness. The evaluation criteria will assess the scientific merit, significance of objectives, technical design, investigator competency, available resources, and relevance to program objectives. The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is expected to be published in May 2025, with application due dates in June and fall 2025, utilizing the U54 activity code for specialized research centers.

The funding opportunity provides up to $1 million in direct costs per year for a potential 5-year award period. Each RDCRC must include 2-4 clinical research projects, with one mandatory longitudinal study, and must establish cores for administration, pilot studies, and career enhancement. The performance sites will be at recipient organizations' facilities, with research conducted by academic institutions, nonprofits, small businesses, and government entities. Multiple NIH institutes are participating, including the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The program emphasizes patient-centric research and requires partnership with patient advocacy groups to support clinical trial readiness and potential treatment development for rare diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States.

Synopsis

Special emphasis will be placed on the early and timely identification of individuals with rare diseases and clinical trial readiness.
