About this opportunity
The Provider's Clinical Support System Universities program will provide resources to graduate students in medical, physician assistant, nurse practitioner and eligible nursing programs to receive training to treat opioid use disorders and prescribe medications for opioid use disorder in office-based settings upon licensure. Administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance program, applicants must be educational institutions that can provide theoretical and practical training for eligible graduate health programs. Applications will be accepted through April 15, 2024 and will likely be evaluated based on the quality and scale of training programs proposed as well as institutional experience in substance abuse treatment education.
Individual award values were not specified but funding will be provided to qualifying educational institutions to develop training programs for graduate health students. The locations for program implementation and service delivery will be based at the institution of higher education that receives funding, so eligible applicants can expect to perform supported work at their home campuses and affiliated clinical sites.
Synopsis
The purpose of this program is to expand and ensure that graduate-level healthcare students receive substance use disorder (SUD) education early in their academic careers and prepare them to identify and treat SUD in mainstream healthcare upon graduation. Students will gain a basic knowledge of strategies to identify, assess, intervene, and treat addiction, as well as support recovery and address SUD stigma. In addition, this program supports the integration of SUD content into the curricula of the respective academic institution.
