About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for prevention and intervention research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) under the R61/R33 phased award mechanism, with applications due November 17, 2026. Highest priority will be given to applications with clinical trials; applicants interested in planning clinical trials may alternatively pursue NOFO TEMP-23832 (R34 option).
Eligible applicants include state and local governments, higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), independent school districts, small businesses, for-profit organizations, special district governments, and public or Indian housing authorities. The opportunity also extends to Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs), faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, non-domestic entities, and U.S. territories or possessions.
The R61 phase will support pilot studies or secondary data analysis for hypothesis development and feasibility testing. Research testing developed hypotheses can be expanded in the R33 phase, with transition determined by NIAAA program staff based on achievement of R61 milestones. The program funds research advancing prevention approaches to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD incidence, and interventions for FASD throughout the lifespan.
This opportunity is funded under the Alcohol Research Programs, Assistance Listing 93.273. The mechanism is grant-based and clinical trial optional.
Synopsis
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) focuses on prevention and intervention strategies for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) throughout the lifespan. The intent of this NOFO is to support research that advances (1) prevention approaches to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and the incidence of FASD and that (2) interventions for FASD. These objectives will be accomplished with the Exploratory/Developmental Phased Award (R61/R33) mechanism, clinical trial optional. The R61 phase will support pilot studies or secondary data analysis for hypothesis development and feasibility, and research testing the hypotheses can be expanded in the R33 phase. The transition to the R33 phase will be determined by NIAAA program staff after evaluation of the achievement of specific milestones set for the R61 phase. Highest priority will be given to applications with clinical trials. Applicants interested in planning clinical trials or adding to current projects may also consider NOFO (TEMP-23832, the R34 option).
