About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for pilot projects investigating understudied proteins associated with rare diseases, with applications due November 16, 2027. Clinical trials are not permitted under this R03 mechanism.
Eligible applicants include state governments, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, higher education institutions (public and private), for-profit organizations, small businesses, county and city governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, faith-based or community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, regional organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are ineligible, though foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted.
Awards will support generation of preliminary data and tools around eligible understudied proteins—members of druggable protein families with known association to rare diseases. The NOFO provides a list of eligible proteins. The funding is intended to jumpstart basic biochemical and biological research to characterize understudied proteins within rare disease contexts.
The opportunity is assigned to multiple NIH grant programs: Mental Health Research Grants (CFDA 93.242), Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders (CFDA 93.173), Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (CFDA 93.121), Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research (CFDA 93.855), Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853), and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (CFDA 93.350).
Applications will be evaluated by peer review panels and relevant NIH advisory councils on scientific merit, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives.
Synopsis
The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to solicit applications for pilot projects to elucidate a role for understudied proteins in rare disease. Awards will support generation of preliminary data and/or tools around eligible understudied protein(s). A list of eligible proteins is provided and are members of druggable protein families that have a known association with a rare disease. This NOFO is intended to jumpstart research on understudied proteins that are associated with rare diseases and provide applicants with sufficient funding to perform basic biochemical and/or biological work to further the characterization of understudied proteins within the context of rare disease.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
