About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is soliciting applications for the Paul Calabresi Career Development Award for Clinical Oncology (K12), an institutional research career development program supporting the training of clinical scientists in cancer research, with an application due date of March 12, 2029. Scholars may not propose to lead an independent clinical trial but may propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor, or propose a separate ancillary study to an existing trial.
Eligible applicants include nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), higher education institutions (public and private), state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, for-profit organizations, small businesses, special district governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities. Non-domestic entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are ineligible; foreign components of U.S. organizations are permitted.
The program operates under CFDA 93.398 (Cancer Research Manpower) and uses the K12 activity code. The goal is to increase the number of clinician-scientists trained in clinical and translational cancer research and promote their career development. The program funds institutional grants with up to five years of trainee support (years 2–7 of a trainee's career), renewable for additional five-year periods. Scientific review assesses merit and technical adequacy of the proposed study, investigator competency, facility adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. Applications undergo peer review and National Cancer Advisory Board review, with approximately ten-month review timelines.
Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. Selected awardees must be U.S. citizens or admitted for permanent residency.
