About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is seeking applicants for grants funding partnerships between Common Fund programs and non-Common Fund biomedical data resources or ecosystems to enhance reusability of Common Fund data and connect the Common Fund Data Ecosystem with other biomedical data ecosystems, with no posted application deadline in the source.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, 501(c)(3 and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, and non-domestic entities.
Projects must involve active collaboration between Common Fund programs and a partner non-Common Fund biomedical data resource. Qualifying partner ecosystems include the HEAL Data Ecosystem, BRAIN Initiative, Cancer Research Data Commons, ImmPort Shared Data, TOPMed, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development resources, National Library of Medicine research resources, and the Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center. Clinical trials are ineligible.
Funding is provided under Trans-NIH Research Support (CFDA 93.310), administered by the NIH Office of Strategic Coordination (Common Fund). Applications undergo scientific merit review by a scientific review group and program relevance review by a national advisory council. The review cycle typically requires four to nine months. Awards support one or more years of performance, with up to four additional years available based on scientific review group and national advisory council recommendation, successful performance, and fund availability. Record retention requirements extend three years from submission of the annual financial status report.
Forecast synopsis
The NIH Office of Strategic Coordination (Common Fund) has generated many valuable and widely available datasets. The Common Fund Data Ecosystem is helping to ensure that all Common Fund (CF) data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to announce the availability of funds for projects that involve collaboration between CF programs and a non-CF biomedical data resource or ecosystem to develop resources that will enhance reusability of Common Fund data and help to connect the Common Fund Data Ecosystem with other important biomedical data ecosystems and resources. Examples of other NIH data resources and ecosystems that could be included in this partnership effort include, but are not limited to, the Helping to End Addition Long-term (HEAL) Data Ecosystem, Brain Research Through Advancing Innovation Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative, Cancer Research Data Commons (CRDC), ImmPort Shared Data, Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Library of Medicine research resources, and the Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC).
