About this opportunity
The Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative seeks applications for integrated research, education, and extension projects addressing critical organic agriculture issues. Applicants may propose projects, conferences, or curricula. The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture will award funds to enhance the ability of organic producers and processors to grow and market high-quality products. Projects will be evaluated based on stakeholder engagement, scientific merit, and relevance to priorities including climate change and soil health. Proposals are due February 15, 2024.
Funding of approximately $44 million will be available each year for fiscal years 2024 and 2025 from the Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Awards range from $50,000 to $3.5 million for integrated projects, $2 million for Tier 2 projects, and $750,000 for curriculum development. Work must be conducted on USDA-certified organic land and facilities to qualify under the Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative federal grant program.
Synopsis
The Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI) seeks to solve critical organic agriculture issues, priorities, or problems through the integration of research, education, and extension activities. The purpose of this program is to fund projects that will enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic agricultural products. Priority concerns include biological, physical, and social sciences, including economics. The OREI is particularly interested in projects that emphasize research, education and outreach that assist farmers and ranchers with whole farm planning by delivering practical research-based information. Projects should plan to deliver applied production information to producers. Fieldwork must be done on certified organic land or on land in transition to organic certification, as appropriate to project goals and objectives. Award recipients may subcontract to organizations not eligible to apply provided such organizations are necessary for the conduct of the project.
