About this opportunity

The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is soliciting applications for the Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI) Workshop Projects program to fund workshops and symposia that bring together scientists and end-users to identify research needs and advance understanding of organic agriculture issues using systems-based approaches. Applicants must be state agricultural experiment stations, colleges and universities, research foundations, federal agencies, national laboratories, private organizations, or U.S. citizens or nationals, and must provide 100 percent matching contributions from non-federal sources. Workshop proposals must address at least one of eight legislatively defined OREI goals and align with FY 2026 priorities including on-farm research, crop propagation and breeding, pest management systems, animal production practices, and farmer whole-farm planning, with all organic systems fieldwork conducted on USDA-certified organic land or facilities in transition to organic certification. Evaluation will be based on justification and need (20 points), stakeholder engagement and organizing committee structure (20 points), program quality and conceptual adequacy (40 points), outreach plan and potential impact (10 points), and personnel qualifications and project management (10 points). Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov by 5:00 P.M. Eastern Time on May 14, 2026, in PDF format with a maximum seven-page project narrative, and no letter of intent is required.

Approximately $450,000 in total funding is available across Fiscal Years 2025 and 2026, with awards ranging from $5,000 to $75,000 per project and an anticipated six awards. Workshop projects must be completed within 12 months of the award start date of September 1, and must produce documented outputs such as proceedings, white papers, fact sheets, or priority-setting documents that are publicly available. Indirect costs are capped at 30 percent of total federal funds awarded. Performance locations may include university research facilities, certified organic farms operating across multiple regions, and extension service offices where workshop activities occur.

Synopsis

The purpose of this program is to fund high priority integrated projects that will enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic agricultural products and to increase resilience in American farming systems.
