About this opportunity

The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is soliciting integrated research, education, and extension projects that enhance the ability of organic producers and processors to grow and market high-quality organic agricultural products while increasing farming system resilience. Applicants must address at least one of eight legislatively defined goals, including crop production and breeding, pest management, animal production, postharvest handling, food safety, seed development, economic evaluation, and international trade. All fieldwork must be conducted on USDA-certified organic land or facilities in transition to certification, and projects must include 100 percent matching contributions from non-federal sources. Evaluation will be based on relevance to OREI priorities and knowledge gaps (20 points), stakeholder engagement including advisory panels (20 points), project conceptual adequacy and approach (40 points), outreach plan and potential impact (10 points), and personnel qualifications and project management (10 points). The application deadline is 5:00 PM Eastern Time on May 14, 2026, with submissions required through Grants.gov.

Approximately $65 million in total funding is available for fiscal years 2025-2026, with individual grants ranging from $50,000 to $3,500,000 across three project tiers: Tier 1 (up to $3,500,000 for multi-institution, multistate projects), Tier 2 (up to $2,000,000 for multidisciplinary projects), and Tier 3 (up to $1,000,000 for locality-specific projects). NIFA anticipates making approximately 26 awards with project durations of 36 to 48 months. Performance locations include state agricultural experiment stations, colleges and universities, research institutions, federal agencies, national laboratories, and private organizations, with eligible applicants including these entity types as well as individuals who are U.S. citizens or nationals.

Synopsis

The purpose of this program is to fund high priority integrated projects that will enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic agricultural products and to increase resilience in American farming systems.
