About this opportunity
The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is soliciting planning project applications designed to facilitate the development of future Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI) proposals requiring multi-regional or regional coordination. Applicants must demonstrate how their planning activities will enhance the ability of organic producers and processors to grow and market high-quality organic products while increasing resilience in American farming systems. Key requirements include conducting all organic systems fieldwork on USDA-certified organic land or facilities in transition to certification, providing 100 percent non-federal matching contributions, and producing clear deliverables such as white papers or priority-setting documents within 12 months. Applications will be evaluated through peer review based on five criteria: justification of planned activities (20 points), stakeholder involvement (20 points), conceptual adequacy and approach (40 points), importance and potential impact (10 points), and qualifications and project management (10 points). The application deadline is 5:00 P.M. Eastern Time on May 14, 2026, with electronic submission required through Grants.gov.
Approximately $550,000 in total funding is available, with individual awards ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, supporting an anticipated 11 awards for Fiscal Year 2026. Projects have a 12-month implementation period, with a project start date of September 1, 2026. Indirect costs cannot exceed 30 percent of total federal funds awarded. Performance of planning activities may occur at eligible applicants' institutions, which include state agricultural experiment stations, colleges and universities, research institutions, federal agencies, private organizations, and multi-entity groups; all applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals.
Synopsis
The purpose of this program is to fund high priority integrated projects that will enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic agricultural products and to increase resilience in American farming systems.
