About this opportunity

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), invites grant applications for Occupational Safety and Health Training Project Grants (T03) with an application due date of October 26, 2028. This program funds high-quality occupational safety and health training delivered by academic institutions and a limited number of non-academic programs targeting specialized audiences including firefighters and commercial fishermen.

Eligible applicants include public and private institutions of higher education, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations (both federally recognized and not federally recognized), nonprofits with and without 501(c)(3) status, small businesses, for-profit organizations, and special district governments and independent school districts. Foreign organizations are not eligible. Any public or private educational institution or agency that has demonstrated competency in occupational safety and health training at the technical, professional, or graduate level may apply, provided trainees are admissible to the grantee institution and enrolled in occupational safety and health training programs.

Academic programs may request budgets up to $50,000 annually for undergraduate programs, $150,000 for graduate programs, and $250,000 for occupational medicine residency programs. Non-academic training programs require justified budgets with no equipment purchases allowed. New applications must request three-year periods of performance; renewal applications may request up to five years; revision applications must be at least two years but not exceed current award length.

NIOSH anticipates awarding between 20 and 30 grants, distributing approximately $4 to $4.8 million annually across new, renewal, resubmission, and revision applications. Applications are evaluated on significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and environment through peer review, with academic programs potentially receiving priority over non-academic programs. The program prioritizes established programs with demonstrated track records, regional collaboration including minority-serving institutions, active advisory councils, and comprehensive evaluation plans documenting trainee career outcomes and workforce impact. CFDA 93.262.

Update #3 · Latest ·

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), invites grant applications for Training Project Grants (TPGs) that are focused on occupational safety and health training. NIOSH is mandated to provide an adequate supply of qualified personnel to carry out the purposes of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the TPGs are one of the principal means for meeting this mandate. The majority of TPGs are in academic institutions that provide high quality undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate academic training in a variety of occupational safety and health (OSH) and allied disciplines. NIOSH also funds a limited number of non-academic TPGs to provide specialized training for target audiences and build or strengthen the Nation's OSH workforce capacity.

Update #2 ·

The closing date is being updated to address system and operational delays resulting from the federal shutdown, including limited access to technical assistance needed for resolving submission issues. This extension is consistent with federal interim guidance on rescheduling deadlines following the lapse in funding and ensures that applicants have sufficient time and access to complete their submissions once normal operations resumed. - The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), invites grant applications for Training Project Grants (TPGs) that are focused on occupational safety and health training.
