About this opportunity
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is soliciting applications for the Small Research Grant Program (R03) to fund occupational safety and health research projects, with application timing to be announced in a future Notice of Funding Opportunity.
The R03 mechanism supports pilot and feasibility studies, secondary data analysis, and research methods development that can be conducted with limited resources. Applicants must articulate the occupational health burden addressed and link research activities to outputs that alleviate this burden, with clear articulation of anticipated impacts during and beyond the project period.
Eligible applicants span a broad range: state and local governments, federally recognized tribal governments, Native American tribal organizations not federally recognized, public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, public and Indian housing authorities, and independent school districts. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.
The program operates under CFDA 93.262 (Occupational Safety and Health Program). Recent awards under this program range from $300 thousand to $3.6 million over two to four years for Project Grants. Project periods typically extend from one to five years based on scientific review recommendations and funding availability.
Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget justification relative to proposed work, and relevance to program objectives. Initial peer review evaluates scientific and technical merit; secondary review by the NIOSH Secondary Review Committee assesses program relevance, with final approval by the NIOSH Director.
Forecast synopsis
The purpose of the R03 grant program is (1) to develop an understanding of the risks and conditions associated with occupational diseases and injuries, (2) to explore methods for reducing risks and preventing or minimizing exposure to hazardous conditions in the workplace, and (3) to translate significant scientific findings into prevention practices and products that will effectively reduce work-related illnesses and injuries.
The NIOSH Small Research grant mechanism (R03) supports occupational safety and health research projects that can be carried out with limited resources, such as pilot and feasibility studies, secondary data analysis, or development of research methods.
Applicants must concisely describe the occupational health burden addressed in their proposal and must link the need for the proposed research activities to planned outputs that will help alleviate this burden. Applicants should clearly articulate the anticipated impacts of the proposed research, both during the project period and beyond.
Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the HHS Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
