About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the NIH Director's Transformative Research Award (R01 Clinical Trial Optional), a forecast opportunity with application due dates in September–October 2026. The award supports individual scientists and research teams pursuing bold, groundbreaking, and unconventional research with potential to transform science, create new scientific paradigms, establish new clinical approaches, or develop transformative technologies.

Eligible applicants include public or private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and not federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, Indian/Native American tribal governments, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, and non-domestic entities.

The award is part of the NIH Common Fund's High-Risk, High-Reward Research Program. Almost all awards are made for at least one year, with additional support up to four more years depending on scientific review group recommendation, national advisory council action, successful annual performance, and fund availability. Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by a scientific review group and for program relevance by a national advisory council or board; the review cycle typically spans four to nine months. Funding decisions are based on scientific merit and program relevance, encompassing significance, approach, innovation, principal investigator competency, resource adequacy, budget, requested period of support, and protection measures against adverse effects on humans, animals, or the environment.

The opportunity falls under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support), administered by the NIH Office of the Director.
