About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health seeks applicants for the NIH Director's Transformative Research Award for Individual and Group Science (R01 Clinical Trial Optional), with applications due September 3, 2026. The program supports bold, groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, original, or unconventional research across any area within the biomedical sciences—including basic, translational, or clinical research—with potential to create new scientific paradigms, establish entirely new clinical approaches, or develop transformative technologies. No preliminary data are required; projects must demonstrate compelling potential for major impact in a broad area of relevance to NIH based on the strength of logic.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, tribal governments (federally recognized and not federally recognized), state governments, city/township governments, county governments, special district governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities.

The award is funded under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support) as a component of the NIH Common Fund's High-Risk, High-Reward Research Program. Awards are made for at least one year, with up to four additional years of support depending on scientific review group recommendation, national advisory council approval, successful annual performance, and fund availability. Scientific merit review encompasses peer review criteria specific to the funding announcement, significance, approach, innovation, principal investigator competency, resource adequacy, budget appropriateness, and where applicable, protective measures for humans, animals, or the environment. Funding decisions are based on scientific merit and program relevance.
