About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is seeking applicants for the NIH Director's Pioneer Award (DP1 Clinical Trial Optional), a grant supporting individual scientists of exceptional creativity proposing bold and highly innovative research projects with potential for major impact on broad areas relevant to NIH's mission, with applications due September 9, 2026.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized), tribal organizations (not federally recognized), independent school districts, and other entities. To be considered pioneering, proposed research must reflect substantially different scientific directions from those already being pursued in the investigator's research program or elsewhere. Applications in all topics relevant to NIH's broad mission are welcome, including basic, translational, and clinical research. This award is a component of the High-Risk, High-Reward Research (HRHR) program of the NIH Common Fund.
Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by a scientific review group and for program relevance by a national advisory council or board. Review criteria encompass significance, approach, and innovation of proposed research; principal investigator competency; adequacy of resources and environment; proposed budget and period of support; and, where applicable, adequacy of measures for protecting humans, animals, or the environment. The review cycle runs four to nine months. Almost all awards are made for at least one year, with additional support up to four more years depending on scientific review group recommendation, advisory council recommendation, successful annual performance, and fund availability.
The opportunity is assigned CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support).
