About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting applications for the NIH Director's New Innovator Award (DP2 Clinical Trial Optional), a grants program supporting exceptionally creative early-stage investigators pursuing bold, innovative research across all fields relevant to the NIH mission, with an application due date in September–October 2026.

The award is open to a broad range of applicants including 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and not federally recognized), U.S. territories and possessions, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities. The program complements other NIH early-stage investigator programs and is part of the NIH Common Fund's High-Risk, High-Reward Research Program.

Awards are made under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support), which covers biomedical and behavioral research across the full spectrum of scientific disciplines within the NIH mission. Scientific merit review encompasses significance, approach, and innovation of the proposed research; competency of the principal investigator; adequacy of resources and environment; budget and period of support; and where applicable, measures for protecting against adverse effects. Funding decisions are based on scientific merit and program relevance, with review by a scientific review group and national advisory council or board. The review cycle typically spans four to nine months.

Almost all awards are made for at least one year, with additional support up to four more years depending on scientific review group and national advisory council recommendations, successful annual performance, and fund availability. Grantees must retain financial and programmatic records for three years from the date the annual financial status report is submitted, subject to audit requirements under OMB 2 CFR 200 and 45 CFR 75, Subpart F.
