About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is seeking applications for the NIDA Research Education Program for Clinical Researchers and Clinicians (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed), with an application due date of August 13, 2026. This mechanism does not support clinical trials or non-research-related clinical training.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), tribal governments and tribal organizations, state and local governments, and other entity types. The program supports educational activities that enhance workforce training in substance use and substance use disorder research, targeting individuals in clinically focused careers or those training as clinicians, health service providers, clinical researchers, or combinations thereof.

Awards operate under CFDA 93.279 (Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs) administered by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Recent awards in this CFDA cluster in the $35,000 to $162,000 range for individual fellowship and early-career investigator grants, while larger mechanisms reach $300,000 to $865,000. Project periods typically do not exceed five years, with non-competing continuations available prior to project termination unless restricted.

The program prioritizes scientific and technical merit, research feasibility, potential contribution to national drug abuse problems, and relevance to NIDA priorities. Peer review occurs through scientific review groups, with final approval and payment authority held by NIDA following National Advisory Council concurrence. The typical timeline from application submission to award is 240 to 270 days.
