About this opportunity
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is soliciting applications for Native Hawaiian Library Services Grants to improve library services for Native Hawaiian communities, with applications due November 13, 2026. Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations that primarily serve and represent Native Hawaiians, defined as U.S. citizens descended from aboriginal people who occupied and exercised sovereignty in Hawaii before 1778. There is no stated cost-share requirement.
Recent awards in the parallel Native American Library Services program have ranged from $6,000 to $10,000 for smaller entities, with variation based on project scope and recipient capacity. Projects must begin September 1, 2025, and may run for one to two years. Work is performed across the Hawaiian islands and at applicant locations nationwide.
The program prioritizes improved digital services, educational programming aligned with library patron and community interests, and enhanced preservation and revitalization of Native Hawaiian cultures and languages. IMLS will conduct competitive peer review using professional field reviewers; evaluation criteria are detailed in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. The IMLS Director makes final funding decisions consistent with agency mission.
Unsuccessful applicants will receive copies of reviewer comments and scores and may consult with IMLS staff regarding proposal revision options. Awardees may request no-cost extensions of up to one year at IMLS discretion. Project records and financial documents must be retained for three years following the final financial report submission.
This opportunity falls under CFDA 45.311, Native American and Native Hawaiian Library Services, administered as a competitive Project Grant.
