About this opportunity
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is seeking applications from nonprofit organizations that primarily serve and represent Native Hawaiians to sustain and improve library and archival services within their communities. Eligible applicants must be nonprofits with active Unique Entity Identifiers (UEI), current System for Award Management (SAM) registrations, and Grants.gov registrations that offer library services addressing one of four primary objectives: serving community learning needs and interests, improving Native Hawaiian well-being, providing access to and preservation of information and collections, or providing emergency or disaster services. Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov by 11:59 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time on April 10, 2026, with anticipated award notifications in September 2026. Peer review evaluation will assess project justification alignment with program goals, project work plan feasibility and resource leverage, and project results sustainability and evaluation. Key allowable costs include personnel salaries and fringe benefits, travel (with $3,000 annually required for IMLS-designated meetings), materials and supplies, equipment, professional training, and program evaluation, while unallowable costs include construction, general operating support, and fundraising expenses.
The program has a total funding pool of $750,000 with anticipated awards of approximately five grants ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 each, with an average award of $150,000 per project. Grant projects will run for a 24-month performance period from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2028. Activities and services will be performed across the Native Hawaiian islands and throughout the country where eligible organizations operate, serving as knowledge and resource centers for their respective communities.
Synopsis
The Native Hawaiian Library Services ('NH') program is designed to assist Native Hawaiian serving organizations in sustaining and improving library services with their communities. As information needs change, Native Hawaiian organizations must be able to serve as knowledge and resource centers to benefit their users and the wellness of their communities. The NH program supports organizations across the islands and country to address their individual information needs and priorities.
