About this opportunity

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is soliciting applications from federally recognized Indian tribes and Alaska Native entities to sustain and improve library and archival services that serve as knowledge and resource centers within their communities. Eligible applicants must provide library and/or archival services and select one of four program objectives: serving community learning needs, improving community well-being, providing access to and preservation of information and collections, or providing emergency and disaster services. Allowable project activities include educational programming, oral history collection, digital media enhancements, professional training, cultural material research, digitization, and facility furnishings. Applications will be evaluated through a competitive peer review process based on project justification, work plan feasibility, realistic resource allocation, and likelihood of achieving stated results. The application deadline is April 10, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, with applicants required to submit complete applications through Grants.gov including the SF-424S form, Program Information Form, Tribal Profile, 5-8 page narrative, Performance Measurement Plan, IMLS Budget Form, Budget Justification, staff resumes, and supporting documents.

The total funding pool for this competition is $3,500,000, with approximately 25 anticipated awards ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 per grant (average of $130,000). Projects will operate for one to two years, with performance periods running from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2028, and award notifications expected in September 2026. Services will be performed by the applicant tribal governments within their respective communities, with eligible costs including personnel, travel (with a $3,000 minimum annual allocation for IMLS-designated meetings), supplies, materials, equipment, training, and evaluation services, while construction and general fundraising costs are unallowable.

Synopsis

The Native American Library Services Enhancement Grants program (NAE) assists eligible Native Communities in sustaining and improving library services with their communities. As information needs change, Tribal libraries must be able to serve as knowledge and resource centers to benefit their users and the wellness of their communities. The NAE program supports Native Communities across the country to address their individual information needs and priorities.
