About this opportunity
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is soliciting applications for the Native American Library Services Basic Grant program to support library operations and services in federally recognized tribes, with applications due November 13, 2026. This is a non-competitive program; IMLS makes awards to all eligible applicants submitting complete applications by the deadline. Cost sharing is not required and will not be accepted.
Eligible applicants are federally recognized Indian tribes, including Alaska Native villages, regional corporations, and village corporations that currently provide library or archival services to their communities. Applicants must be listed in the Federal Register's list of federally recognized tribes as of January 30, 2026, and must demonstrate current provision of services such as free access to materials, research databases, reference services, programming, and community events.
Total funding available is $1.7 million, with approximately 170 anticipated awards ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 per award. Projects run May 1, 2027 through April 30, 2028.
Applicants must align projects with one of four program objectives: acquisition of library-related materials, community programming addressing tribal priorities, staff training, or combined activities spanning multiple objectives. All proposed costs must comply with 2 C.F.R. 200 and cannot include indirect costs, construction, or fundraising. Applications require submission of the SF-424S form, the IMLS Library-Discretionary Program Information Form, a Library Services Plan (up to 2 pages), and an IMLS Budget Form through Grants.gov. Prior to submission, applicants must obtain a Unique Entity Identifier, register with SAM.gov, and establish an active Grants.gov account. Award notifications are expected in April 2027.
The program operates under CFDA 45.311, Native American and Native Hawaiian Library Services.
Synopsis
The Native American Basic Grants (NAB) program assists eligible Native Communities in establishing, sustaining, and improving library services and operations with their communities. As information needs change, Tribal libraries must be able to serve as knowledge and resource centers to benefit their users and the wellness of their communities. The NAB program supports Native Communities across the country to address their individual information needs and priorities.
