About this opportunity
The Native American Library Services Basic Grant (2026) is a non-competitive funding opportunity administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) designed to support federally recognized Native American tribes and Alaska Native communities in establishing, sustaining, and improving library and archival services. Eligible applicants must be federally recognized tribal governments or Alaska Native entities offering library services and must maintain active registrations with SAM.gov and Grants.gov prior to submission. The program supports four primary objectives: acquiring library-related materials, developing community programming, training library staff, and implementing projects combining multiple objectives to address community information needs and wellness priorities. Awards are made on a non-competitive basis to eligible applicants submitting complete applications by the March 13, 2026 deadline at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, with funding decisions expected in July 2026 and project performance periods running from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027. Key application requirements include submission through Grants.gov Workspace with the SF-424S form, IMLS Library-Discretionary Program Information Form, a Library Services Plan (up to 2 pages), and IMLS Budget Form.
The program will distribute approximately $1.7 million in total federal funding across an anticipated 170 awards, with individual grant amounts ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 per recipient. No cost sharing is required, and allowable expenses include personnel, travel, materials, supplies, equipment, training, and program evaluation; indirect costs are not permitted. Projects will be performed at tribal library facilities across the United States, with awardees required to comply with 2 CFR Part 200, IMLS regulations, and applicable federal reporting requirements including financial and performance reports.
Synopsis
The Native American Basic Grants (NAB) program assists eligible Native Communities in establishing, sustaining, and improving library services and operations with their communities. As information needs change, Tribal libraries must be able to serve as knowledge and resource centers to benefit their users and the wellness of their communities. The NAB program supports Native Communities across the country to address their individual information needs and priorities.
