About this opportunity
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is soliciting applications for National Leadership Grants for Libraries (NLG-L) to fund projects that enhance library and archival services nationwide, with applications due November 13, 2026. Eligible applicants include libraries and parent organizations, graduate programs in library science, digital libraries and archives, state and tribal library agencies, library consortia, and library or archives associations operating on a permanent basis at national, regional, state, or local levels. No cost share is required.
Projects must address one or more program objectives: promoting adult reading and health and financial literacies; advancing programming and archival practices related to American history; managing and preserving the national information infrastructure; enhancing services through emerging technologies; improving community prosperity; providing emergency services during disasters; or building collaborative partnerships between libraries, archives, and museums. Projects must begin August 1, 2027, and run for one to three years depending on project type.
Recent NLG-L awards have ranged from $10,000 to over $1.5 million, with typical grants clustering between $100,000 and $1.5 million. IMLS will evaluate applications through peer review using published review criteria. Successful proposals must demonstrate far-reaching impact beyond the applicant institution, reflect thorough understanding of current practice and field initiatives, employ novel approaches, incorporate strategic collaborations, and generate replicable tools, research findings, models, or practices. IMLS will notify applicants of funding decisions by email following deliberations and will provide unsuccessful applicants with reviewer comments and scores; resubmission after revision is invited. Awardees must retain financial records and project documentation for three years following submission of the final financial report. The program operates under CFDA 45.312.
