About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications to the National Cooperative Drug/Device Discovery/Development Groups (NCDDG) program to advance discovery, preclinical development, and proof of concept testing of new therapeutic agents and neurostimulation approaches for mental disorders, substance use disorders, and alcohol use disorders, with applications due October 25, 2027. This is a U19 Cooperative Agreement mechanism supporting multiple research projects directed toward a unified major objective, requiring multidisciplinary and long-term approaches; investigators pursuing focused, discrete projects should consider the companion U01 FOA instead.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), tribal organizations and governments (federally recognized and other), for-profit organizations including small businesses, city/township/county/state governments, special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and U.S. territories or possessions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities are not eligible to apply; however, foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed. Partnerships between academia and industry are strongly encouraged.

The program funds research advancing understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research. Research may encompass neurobiological mechanisms, clinical interventions, implementation science approaches, and epidemiological investigations. The FOA is a reissue of PAR-20-119. Applications are funded under CFDA 93.242, Mental Health Research Grants, administered by the National Institute of Mental Health. Standard NIH peer review procedures apply, with evaluation based on scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance.

Synopsis

Reissue of PAR-20-119. This FOA encourages applications to advance the discovery, preclinical development, and proof of concept (PoC) testing of new, rationally based candidate agents and neurostimulation approaches to treat mental disorders, substance use disorders (SUDs) or alcohol use disorder (AUD), and to develop novel ligands and circuit-engagement devices as tools to further characterize existing or to validate new drug/device targets. Partnerships between academia and industry are strongly encouraged. This FOA supports a research program of multiple projects directed toward a specific major objective, basic theme or program goal, requiring a broadly based, multidisciplinary and often long-term approach. Projects seeking support for a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing his or her specific interest and competencies should consider the companion U01 FOA.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organization) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
