About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for dissertation grants supporting doctoral candidates in high-priority areas of maternal and child health through analysis of ECHO Cohort data, with applications due October 15, 2026. Eligible applicants include domestic public and private nonprofits, universities, for-profit organizations, state and local government entities, tribal governments, and other domestic institutions; foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. The source does not specify cost share requirements, award amounts, award floor, expected number of awards, or period of performance.

Applicants must access the Environmental Influences on Child Health (ECHO) Cohort dataset housed in the NICHD Data and Specimen Hub (DASH) repository, which integrates de-identified longitudinal data from more than 71,000 maternal and child participants across the U.S. Research must focus on early environmental exposures and child health outcomes within five primary pediatric areas: pre-, peri-, and postnatal outcomes; upper and lower airway outcomes; obesity and its consequences; neurodevelopment; and positive health. Prenatal and child exposure data include physical, chemical, social, behavioral, and biological factors. Clinical trials are not permitted under the R36 mechanism.

The program aims to facilitate entry of promising new investigators into early environmental exposures and child health research by stimulating doctoral student use of ECHO data. Doctoral candidates must work with their sponsoring organizations to develop applications. Applications are reviewed by scientific review groups for scientific and technical merit, followed by administrative review for program relevance. The opportunity is available through NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (CFDA 93.313) and Trans-NIH Research Support (CFDA 93.310). Grantees must retain financial and programmatic records for three years from the date the annual Financial Status Report is submitted.

Synopsis

The goal of this NOFO is to support doctoral candidates studying high-priority areas of child health for the completion of their doctoral dissertation research project. This NOFO seeks to advance research in child health by stimulating the use of Environmental Influences on Child Health (ECHO) Cohort data by doctoral students in relevant scientific areas. This RFA will provide students working on dissertations the opportunity to access the ECHO data within the NICHD Data and Specimen Hub (DASH) repository. ECHO"s DASH dataset integrates de-identified longitudinal data from more than 71,000 participants across the U.S. Prenatal and child exposure data include physical, chemical, social, behavioral, and biological factors. ECHO"s five primary pediatric outcome areas are pre-, peri-, and postnatal outcomes, upper and lower airway, obesity, neurodevelopment, and positive health. This award will facilitate the entry of promising new investigators into the field of early environmental exposures and child health research, enhancing the pool of highly talented researchers.

Eligibility

Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International Collaborations:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
