About this opportunity

The Health Resources and Services Administration is soliciting applications to develop and implement community-based produce prescription programs and nutrition education for pregnant and postpartum women at risk of nutrition insecurity, with an application deadline of July 17, 2026.

Eligible applicants include domestic state and local governments, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), public and private higher education institutions, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, independent school districts, county governments, and special district governments. All applicants must secure letters of support from at least one healthcare partner (hospital, Federally Qualified Health Center, Veterans Affairs clinic, healthcare provider group, or rural or urban health clinic) and at least one community-based organization partner. Applicants cannot submit more than one application and must designate a Project Director with at least 10 percent time commitment and expertise in produce prescription programs.

HRSA will award up to $13 million in total fiscal year 2026 funding supporting approximately 26 grants of up to $500,000 annually. The four-year project period runs from September 30, 2026 through September 29, 2030, distributed across four 12-month budget periods. Awards are expected by August 30, 2026.

Grantees must enroll eligible pregnant women (those participating in SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, CHIP, or screening as food insecure), ideally before 16 weeks gestation. Core activities include designing produce prescription programs providing vouchers or prescriptions for fresh, frozen, canned, or dried fruits and vegetables, building community partnerships with food retailers and distributors, providing evidence-informed nutrition education, and collecting participant-level data on fruit and vegetable intake, household food security, gestational weight gain, health status, and birth outcomes using the RE-AIM evaluation framework. Grantees must participate in coordinating center-led training and technical assistance, including quarterly recipient calls and at least one technical assistance visit. Allowable expenses include nutrition education, transportation for participation or produce delivery, and subawards for community-based partners; purchasing food outside of produce incentives is prohibited.

Merit review criteria total 100 points: need (10 points), response and approach (35 points), performance reporting and evaluation (20 points), impact (10 points), resources and capabilities (15 points), and support requested (10 points).

This opportunity is funded under the Special Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.110).
