About this opportunity

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is soliciting applications for the Limited Competition: NIGMS Mature Synchrotron Resources for Structural Biology program (P30) with an application due date of October 2, 2028. This opportunity is restricted to existing synchrotron resources currently supported by NIGMS funding; applications for resources whose funding ended more than 36 months prior to the due date are ineligible.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, government agencies, small businesses, and federally recognized tribal governments. Foreign organizations and non-U.S. entities are not eligible. No cost share or matching requirement is specified.

The funding instrument is a Center Core Grant (P30) with no predetermined budget limit; budgets must reflect actual project needs. Support extends up to five years. The NOFO expires October 3, 2028, with earlier application deadlines of October 2, 2026 and October 2, 2027, corresponding to earliest start dates of March 2027, March 2028, and March 2029.

The program supports mature, well-established X-ray beamline technologies at synchrotron facilities for static and dynamic imaging of biological systems. Applications must follow Multi-Project instructions and include four required components: Overall component, Administration Core, Technology Operations Core(s), and User Training and Outreach component. At least one Program Director/Principal Investigator must devote at least 2.4 person-months; at least one senior scientist (distinct from the PD/PI) must devote at least 6 person-months.

Peer review emphasizes significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and environment. Funding decisions consider scientific merit, availability of funds, program priorities, geographic distribution of users, and increased national access to synchrotron-based technologies. Clinical trials are not allowed.

The program operates under CFDA 93.859 (Biomedical Research and Research Training).

Synopsis

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) supports "mature" resources at synchrotron facilities that provide user access to X-ray beamlines for static and dynamic imaging of biological systems ranging from molecules to organs. "Mature" refers to the techniques made available at the resource beamlines, which must be well established and provide utility to the communities they serve without requiring significant novel technology development. Applications may only request support for existing synchrotron resources that are currently supported by NIGMS funding. The facility is expected to be maintained or upgraded to current best practices, make its capabilities and availability known to the biomedical research community through outreach activities, and provide user training and support. This is a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for a Limited Competition that will invite application(s) from eligible organization(s) to apply. Please see Section III. Eligibility for additional information. In accordance with NIH standard peer-review processes, the application(s) will be peer-reviewed, and only meritorious application(s) will be considered for funding.

Eligibility

Requirement for Current NIGMS Support: This NOFO is limited to applicants requesting support for existing synchrotron resources that are currently supported by NIGMS funding. Applications cannot support resources whose funding ended more than 36 months prior to the application due date.Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International CollaborationsNon-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organization) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
