About this opportunity

The National Institute on Drug Abuse seeks applicants to establish a research education course in entrepreneurship and product development for drug addiction researchers, with applications due by October 1, 2026. This is a limited competition restricted to higher education institutions and 501(c)(3) nonprofits with established, well-recognized business or entrepreneurship teaching programs and demonstrated capacity to deliver integrated curriculum tailored to substance use disorder research. Non-U.S. entities and foreign components are ineligible.

NIDA intends to commit $350,000 in FY2027 to fund one cooperative agreement award. Applicants may request up to $325,000 in direct costs annually over a maximum 5-year project period. Indirect costs are reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs. No cost share is required.

The Principal Investigator must be a faculty member from the school of business or entrepreneurship, with multidisciplinary collaboration strongly encouraged. Applicants must develop or refine a customized curriculum addressing opportunity recognition, stakeholder understanding, intellectual property, team building, funding acquisition, and market analysis, delivered through structured education programs or short courses with a required in-person component. The recruitment strategy must target a minimum annual cohort of 25 NIDA-sponsored participants (U.S. citizens or permanent residents without prior small business grant funding) at no cost, with additional provisions for non-NIDA participants at participant expense. Eligible institutions must provide institutional commitment including staff, facilities, and educational resources.

The course focuses on early-stage innovation endeavors preparing drug addiction researchers to recognize research potential, assess viable product development opportunities, utilize business ideation tools, perform customer discovery, establish intellectual property protections, develop regulatory approaches, understand reimbursement landscapes, source capital including SBIR and STTR funding, and generate revenue.

Clinical trials are not allowed. The funding instrument is a cooperative agreement under CFDA 93.279 (Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs).

Synopsis

The course is envisioned to focus on building capacity in product development, entrepreneurship, and innovation pathways so participants can more effectively move biomedical ideas from early research toward implementation, or commercialization. By combining structured training, mentorship, and hands-on experience, the course is envisioned to accelerate the development of biomedical products that address the complex challenges of drug use, drug misuse, and drug addiction, while fostering an interdisciplinary community of investigators prepared to navigate the scientific, regulatory, and business aspects of this unique research field.
