About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for investigator-initiated research in computational genomics, data science, statistics, and bioinformatics with an application due date of September 4, 2026. Clinical trials are not permitted under this funding opportunity. Eligible applicants include state governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, for-profit organizations, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, city and county governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities.
The funding opportunity supports fundamental genomics research developing innovative analytical methodologies and approaches, early-stage development of tools and software, and refinement or hardening of software and tools of high value to the biomedical genomics community. All applications must address how proposed methods would scale to increasingly larger datasets and demonstrate how work is enabling for genomics and generalizable or broadly applicable across diseases and biological systems.
The opportunity operates under two Assistance Listings: Medical Library Assistance (CFDA 93.879) and Human Genome Research (CFDA 93.172). The Human Genome Research program shows robust historical activity with 4,108 total awards since 1986 and $10.77 billion in cumulative federal dollars obligated. Recent awards in this program area range from $600 thousand to $5.8 million. The Medical Library Assistance program has awarded 2,215 total grants with average annual disbursement of 41 awards over the past five years; recent individual awards have ranged from approximately $228 thousand to $1.35 million.
Synopsis
The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for a broad range of research efforts in computational genomics, data science, statistics, and bioinformatics relevant to one or both of basic or clinical genomic science, and broadly applicable to human health and disease. This FOA supports fundamental genomics research developing innovative analytical methodologies and approaches, early-stage development of tools and software, and refinement or hardening of software and tools of high value to the biomedical genomics community. Work supported under this FOA should be enabling for genomics and be generalizable or broadly applicable across diseases and biological systems. All applications should address how the methods would scale to address increasingly larger data sets.
