About this opportunity

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) National Center for Education Research (NCER) seeks applications for grants supporting state agencies' use of statewide longitudinal data systems (SLDSs) to generate evidence for education program and policy decisions, with applications due October 1, 2026 at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time and letters of intent due September 3, 2026. The maximum award is $1.2 million over three years. Eligible applicants include state agencies responsible for education programs and policies, non-profit and for-profit organizations, colleges, universities, and public and private agencies and institutions with demonstrated research capacity. The state agency responsible for the education issue, program, or policy to be examined must either be the applicant (with the principal investigator from the agency) or a co-applicant (with a co-principal investigator from the agency); eligible state agencies include the State Educational Agency responsible for K–12, as well as agencies overseeing pre-kindergarten, career and technical education, postsecondary education, and adult education. State agencies may apply independently or in collaboration with research organizations such as universities and research firms, and other appropriate organizations such as other state agencies or local educational agencies. Projects must utilize the state's SLDS and measure one or more education outcomes including academic achievement, English language proficiency, school readiness, course and grade completion, or postsecondary and adult education access and completion. Applicants may supplement SLDS data with other state or federal datasets and may collect primary data if appropriate, though most funding should support analysis of existing data. Applications require a 15-page project narrative addressing Significance, Research Plan, Data, and Decision Making and Dissemination; letters of agreement demonstrating SLDS data access; a Data Sharing and Management Plan; and alignment with Standards for Excellence in Education Research (SEER) standards. Scientific peer review will evaluate significance, research plan quality, data access and expertise, and decision-making and dissemination strategies. Possible project start dates range from July 1, 2027 to September 1, 2027. The assistance listing number is 84.305S.
