About this opportunity

The Department of Education's National Center for Education Research is seeking applicants for Research Training Programs in the Education Sciences (ALN 84.305B) with an application due date of October 1, 2026. The opportunity comprises two distinct programs: the Early Career Development and Mentoring Program for Education Research, which carries a maximum award of $500,000 over four years, and the Methods Training for Education Research program, which carries a maximum award of $800,000 over three years.

For the Early Career program, eligible applicants are research institutions (academic or non-academic) located in the territorial United States with ability and capacity to conduct rigorous research, including nonprofit and for-profit organizations and public and private colleges and universities. Principal investigators must have completed a doctoral degree between April 1, 2019, and the award start date, hold a faculty or research scientist position with research as a major component, and not have received tenure by the application deadline. At least one mentor at the PI's home institution is required.

For the Methods Training program, eligible applicants located in the territorial United States with ability and capacity to conduct training in scientific research methods are eligible to apply. An applying institution may hold more than one Methods Training award and submit multiple applications if they are substantively different with no overlaps in key personnel.

Both programs require compliant applications including a training program narrative (22 pages maximum for Early Career; 15 pages for Methods Training), Appendix A (Engagement and Dissemination Plan), Appendix D (Letters of Agreement), and Appendix F (Alignment with Standards for Excellence in Education Research). Early Career applications must include Appendix E (Data Sharing and Management Plan). All key personnel must obtain persistent identifiers such as ORCID before award. Applications undergo scientific peer review based on significance, research or training plan quality, personnel qualifications, resources, and engagement and dissemination strategies. A non-binding letter of intent is encouraged by September 3, 2026. Possible project start dates fall between July 1 and September 1, 2027.

Synopsis
