About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for research on innovative screening approaches and therapeutic interventions for screenable disorders in newborns, with an application due date of November 16, 2027.
Eligible applicants include state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, public and private higher education institutions, small businesses, for-profit organizations, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, special district governments, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, tribally controlled colleges and universities, regional organizations, faith-based and community-based organizations, U.S. territories and possessions, and non-domestic entities.
This R21 mechanism supports development of novel screening approaches and/or therapeutic interventions for potentially fatal or disabling conditions already identified through newborn screening, as well as "high priority" genetic conditions where screening is not currently recommended but early identification and treatment would significantly benefit infants. Applicants must demonstrate both the availability of accurate screening tests and evidence of benefits from early intervention or treatment. Clinical trial participation is optional.
The funding opportunity is assigned to the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) administered by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Applications receive dual scientific review by non-NIH peer reviewers. Evaluation criteria assess research significance, approach, innovation, investigator qualifications, and institutional environment. No cost share is specified. Award amounts, number of awards, and period of performance are not provided in the source material.
Synopsis
This FOA encourages research relevant to the development of novel screening approaches and/or therapeutic interventions for potentially fatal or disabling conditions that have been identified through newborn screening, as well as for "high priority" genetic conditions where screening may be possible in the near future.Having an accurate screening test, as well as demonstrating the benefits of early intervention or treatment, are important criteria for including a condition on a newborn screening panel. This FOA defines a "high priority" condition as one where screening is not currently recommended, but infants with the condition would significantly benefit from early identification and treatment.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
