About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is seeking applicants for research on innovative screening approaches and therapeutic interventions for screenable disorders in newborns, with applications due November 16, 2027. This R01 grant (CFDA 93.865, Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) is open to a broad range of applicants, including higher education institutions (public and private), for-profit and nonprofit organizations, small businesses, government entities, tribal organizations, and faith-based or community-based organizations. The FOA encourages research addressing potentially fatal or disabling conditions identified through existing newborn screening panels, as well as "high priority" genetic conditions where screening is not currently recommended but where early identification and treatment would significantly benefit infants. An accurate screening test and demonstrated benefits of early intervention are key criteria for inclusion on newborn screening panels.

Eligible applicants also include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, regional organizations, U.S. territories and possessions, and non-domestic entities. The program evaluates proposals based on significance, approach, innovation, investigator qualifications, and research environment. Applications are subject to dual scientific review by non-NIH scientists. Applicants must submit using the FORMS-I application system with research-specific instructions and forms as detailed in the accompanying Application Guide.

Synopsis

This FOA encourages research relevant to the development of novel screening approaches and/or therapeutic interventions for potentially fatal or disabling conditions that have been identified through newborn screening, as well as for "high priority" genetic conditions where screening may be possible in the near future.Having an accurate screening test, as well as demonstrating the benefits of early intervention or treatment, are important criteria for including a condition on a newborn screening panel. This FOA defines a "high priority" condition as one where screening is not currently recommended, but infants with the condition would significantly benefit from early identification and treatment.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
