About this opportunity

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) are soliciting research proposals to identify and evaluate risk factors associated with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), with particular emphasis on military service, contact sports, traumatic brain injury, neuroinflammation, and infectious agents. The opportunity supports four distinct funding options: Option A for research with strong existing evidence on environmental or genetic risk factors; Option B for new and exploratory research using innovative methods; Option C for understanding ALS risk in affected populations such as military veterans; and Option D for analyzing biological samples from the Guamanian ALS cluster. Applicants must have a principal investigator with documented expertise in human epidemiological research on ALS risk factors, including experience with case-control studies and large epidemiological datasets, and must conduct at least 60 percent of the proposed work. Proposals will undergo two levels of merit review evaluating significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and environment, followed by secondary review considering program priorities, portfolio balance, and investigator status. The application deadline is June 10, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET, with an optional letter of intent due May 27, 2026, and an informational webinar scheduled for June 2, 2026.

Awards of up to $500,000 per year are available for Options A and D, while Options B and C support up to $300,000 per year, with three awards anticipated across a 3-year performance period structured in 12-month budget periods and total program funding of $4,500,000. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, institutions of higher education (public and private), nonprofits, tribal organizations, and other entities, with performance locations reflecting the geographic distribution of awardee organizations. Recipients must submit a data management plan and ensure their work includes specific aims focused on environmental toxicant-mediated ALS etiology and human epidemiological investigation.

Synopsis

CDC/ATSDR is inviting research proposals to study risk factors for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Studies on military service, contact sports, traumatic brain injury, neuroinflammation, and infections agents and exposures are encouraged. Funding will be for four funding options: Option A - Support research with strong existing evidence such as studies on known environmental or genetic risk factors, research that improves past studies with better data, or investigations linking risk factors to ALS diagnosis and treatment; Option B - Support new and exploratory research on ALS risk factors such as studies on risk factors with little existing evidence or research using innovative methods; Option C - Understand ALS risk in affected populations, such as studies involving military veterans or investigations of ALS risk factors impacting this population; Option D - Analyze biological samples from the Guamanian ALS cluster such as investigation of disease mechanisms and environmental factors, exposure routes, genetic studies and biomarkers and how this could lead to mitigation therapeutics, diagnostics or prevention.
