About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant Program to fund purchase or upgrade of a single item of high-end, specialized, commercially available instrument or integrated system, with applications due July 16, 2026. Awards range from a minimum of $750,001 to a maximum of $2,000,000, with no maximum price limit on the instrument itself.
Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, and other organizations. Applications must originate from groups of NIH-supported investigators and require institutional support documentation and multi-user shared-access arrangements.
Supported instruments include, but are not limited to, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, X-ray diffractometers, mass spectrometers, high-throughput robotic screening systems, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and light microscopes, flow cytometers, and biomedical imagers.
Evaluation emphasizes the need for the instrument, technical expertise in the requested technology, how the novel technology will advance proposed research projects, administration of instrument usage, and institutional support for long-term maintenance. Initial peer review assesses scientific merit and general significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives.
The funding opportunity is assigned to three Assistance Listings: Research Infrastructure Programs (93.351), Biomedical Research and Research Training (93.859), and Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health (93.286). Final review and recommendation proceed through the NIH Council of Councils.
